A Taste of Africa is a restaurnant specializing in food from Cameroon.

The owner used to have a building near the Ashby BART station but recently sold the location. The new restaurant at that location is a Jamaican restaurant. The old building hours were Tuesdays through Saturdays, 3 pm to 8 pm.

Now, their only presence is at the Ashby Flea Market, continuing their Saturday and Sunday presence as before the building was sold.

The staff who work here are very nice, but not having the ambiance of the cute building takes a bit away from the downhome atmosphere. Typically only one or two people may be working at a time, and there is a lot of downtime in their operation. To keep the food fresh and hot between these pockets of customers, they don't cook it until you order it. The downside is that you may have to wait around for an hour or more for two entrees!

The food is worth the wait! It's hard to describe, because saying that it's mostly seasoned meat, rice, and beans makes it sound like Mexcian food. However, the fresh food and its preparation are unique and tasty. For an appetizer, try the fried plantains.

The black-eyed peas and the sweet potatoes are great vegetarian choices. Their spinach is great too. I've tried most of the chicken dishes, and they're awesome. They have some homemade (tropical) drinks. One kinda tasted like a margarita and I didn't care much for it. The ginger one was amazing.

Although there's quite a variety of vegetarian and meat options, the price is a bit steep. Expect at least $8 to order and entree. Perhaps the best value is one of the $12 combination plates. It's quite a lot of food, and then you can be happy as you walk around the rest of the flea market.

Beyond the many selections, the absolute best thing about this restaurant is the hot sauce. This sauce is extremely dangerous, and the cooks are VERY proud of it. During the summer, they have a hot sauce eating competition. If the normal strength is not enough for you, sometimes they have even more spicy renditions. I can't stress enough that this sauce is the spiciest thing I have EVER eaten in my life. On my first visit, I barely used a pea-shaped amount of it and I was sweating like a pig as I left the restaurant. Definitely take your friend who likes spicy food here, or go with friends to have a mini-competition.
