Alcatraz is an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. It is most famous for being an unescapeable prison, and was home to many convicts. It is now closed from its original purpose, and is managed by the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

Alcatraz in Film & Television

The island was prominently featured in the films The Rock and The Birdman of Alcatraz and has been prominently featured in scores more such as X-Men 3.


Visiting Alcatraz

Tours of Alcatraz operate year-round, though you should plan your trip and purchase tickets several days to a week ahead. You can easily choose the day and time and purchase tickets online ahead of your trip. Be sure to bring something warm to wear.

Tours leave every half hour during most weekdays from Pier 33, night tours start at 4:20pm (not to late for the kids)


Day Tours

  • $17.25 for seniors (age 62+)
  • $18.75 for adults and youth (ages 12-61)
  • $10.75 for children (ages 5-11)
  • Free for children under age 5


Night Tours (Thursdays - Mondays only)

  • $23.25 for seniors (age 62+)
  • $25.75 for adults (ages 18-61)
  • $23.25 for youth (ages 12-17)
  • $14.75 for children (ages 5-11)
  • Free for children under age 5
