Situated in the East Bay just north of Oakland, Berkeley is home to a University of California campus and a storied history of protest. The city is named for Bishop George Berkeley. Though the area started with the postal address of "Berkeley, near Oakland", the city has flourished with a strong diversity of residents. To the north are the cities of Albany and El Cerrito. To the south is Oakland, and to the southwest lies Piedmont. The area just east of the Berkeley-Oakland hills is colloquially known as La Morinda.
Berkeley is home to the Free Speech Movement as well as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the eastern foothills. Berkeley is deservedly considered out of the ordinary, as evidenced by such loving nicknames as "Bezerkeley". The era of the Free Speech Movement debate surrounds other landmark protests such as the Loyalty Oath controversy, the People's Park debate, and the Clark Kerr FBI investigation, among probably many others. Embracing its wierdness, the city hosts an annual How Berkeley Can You Be? Parade. Certain eccentric, local figures, such as the Happy Happy Happy man, frequent the city near the UC campus. Although Berkeley only has a tiny handful of shopping districts, the local shops near and along Telegraph Avenue are quite well known.
