The best part about Ryowa is the way the waitresses say "Ready?" when they proceed to take your order. They sound like they popped right out of a Japanese video game like Bust-a-move.
This Japanese restaurant specializes in ramen noodle soups, and they are delicious -- I think these soups are like a Japanese equivalent of chicken soup comfort food, even if they are slightly more pungent and in some cases more spicy. Their signature Ryowa-style Ramen is made with a special base, which tastes like miso soup with a kick. One of their more idiosyncratic dishes is the Butter Corn Ramen, which also uses the special base, includes generous handful of corn, and a pat of butter on top of the corn. Surprisingly, it's good. They also make soups with a soybean base, which tastes more like traditional miso soup, and is blander than their special Ryowa base.
Side dishes include a tea egg (which they used to call "healthy egg") and gyoza (shrimp and pork). Their gyoza is made using the traditional thinner skin, rather than the thicker type, and it is fried. Complimentary kimchee is available on every table.
You get a glass of barley tea when you are seated, but you can request water. They have both bar and table seating, and serve all sorts of Asian drinks besides barley tea: their selection includes Asahi beer, Sapporo beer, and a (non-alcoholic) Aloe Vera drink.
Like many bubble tea places, they have a television in a corner of the restaurant showing Asian T.V. fare. In their case, it's usually a talk show or game show that looks like The Price is Right but is more colorful and goofy. Lately they haven't had the television on though.
They are open for both lunch and dinner. Noodle soups are $7, tea egg is $1, other appetizers are $2.
