The San Francisco Railway Museum recently opened at the southern end of the Ferry Plaza and tells the story of San Francisco's pioneering transit history. San Francisco is where Cable Cars were invented after all.
The museum is operated by the non-profit Market Street Railway for both education and raise funds to purchase and restore more historic streetcars from around the would to run on the F-Market & Wharves line.
For the 1906 Earthquake centennial, the opening exhibit is devoted to the effect the earthquake and fire had on our railways and the part streetcars played in the City's recovery. The exhibit is planned to run into early next year.
The museum's permanent collection includes artifacts and photographs from San Francisco's early days when dozens of cable car lines climbed the hills and streetcars ran through San Francisco's wide open fields and dunes.
A good range of merchandise is available at the museum, and at the Market Street Railway's online store to raise money for the organization. Many items are very locals only that tourists will not recognize, but locals will.
