Vallejo is a city of 120,000 people located Northeast of San Francisco county. It is accessible via I-80 and the Bay Link ferry. It is largely a bedroom community, and home to many commuters.
Vallejo was founded in 1851 and is named after its "discoverer," General Mariano G. Vallejo. Vallejo's has historically served as a naval and maritime shipping town. In fact, it was home to the West coast's first shipyard, the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. However, this facility was closed in 1996, and it is currently slated for commercial, industrial and residential development. Interestingly, Vallejo served as the state capitol twice in the 1850s.
