The secret Indian food place of Berkeley, Vik's is consistently recommended by Indians who know Indian food (and by everyone else who's eaten here). It's tucked away in a mostly residential area, and operates out of a warehouse. The place is often crowded, especially on Saturdays, but the food is worth the wait.
Most Indian restaurants offer approximately similar selections: various curries, some naan and poori, a few appetizers like samosas. At Vik's, you can get these as well as things not typically seen on Indian restaurant menus: ras malai, baidi roti, mirchi vada. (Check out the menu on their webpage.) Their descriptions are fairly accurate, but may not tell you whether the dish is hot or cold.
Go there with a bunch of friends, spend about $10 each, and you will get more food than you can finish. Save room for their desserts -- various petit fours-sized cookies and pastries. If you're inspired by their delicious food to do some Indian cooking, stop by their Indian food supply store next door before heading home.
